Shooting indoor sporting events is one of the most challenging types of photography. You have the combination of all the toughest elements, speed, low light, distance and poor positioning. Recently while shooting at the Royal Horse Show (The Royal Winter Fair) I pushed the limits of my camera and myself. Trying to capture a perfect shot was tough under the dimly lit arena and fast paced horse jumping.
Indoor Horse Photography Tips
When photographing horses the most important thing to remember is speed. Outside of creative shots the most critical setting is your shutter speed. Having this set too low will ruin the picture. Start with setting the shutter speed to 800 or higher. From here you can work backwards setting the aperture (which is usually wide open) and then the ISO.
